Well, I still haven't tackled picking up My Scrapbook Studio nor have I made anything "scrappy" today - YET! I decided to create a cork board message center and picture frame cork board instead. They have been needing to get done so there! Check and check!
The faux wooden laminate wall next to our fridge was damaged so I decided to create a full-length cork board to make our own calendar/message center. Here is what I used:
Fridge Cork Message Center:
* 12x12" cork tiles (come in a 4pk) - $5ish x 2 = $10
*Contact Cement by Weldwood (3oz size) - $6
*Xacto knife - very important - tried scizzors but it chewed the edges
*Cutting mat
*Wooden ruler
Picture Frame Cork Board:
*Large picture frame - this is approx. 18 x20"
*Thick poster board - $2ish
*Roll of cork - $6ish
*Cutting mat
*Wooden Ruler
The adhesive squares that come with the cork tiles are a joke - use for some other project. I researched a good product for adhering porous cork to faux wood board and contact cement came up. I did try permanet Elmers Spray Adhesive to the picture frame cork and poster board but it just came off - the contact cement is working great.
The contact cement is pretty stinky so make sure you have a well-ventilated area to work in. Read the directions thoroughly before beginning. The brush attached to the cover works but it's small. Be patient and cover both the cork and other surface well - it doesn't need to be thick.
I debated about covering the cork tiles with fabric but I knew I wanted a clean look as the message center will be cluttered enough with a calendar, Box Tops and can tabs we collect for school, our emergency contact list, Kayleigh's artwork, etc.
I was able to completely clear off my fridge from the clutter and now it is nice and neat on the message center. Initially, I wasn't crazy about the tile lines but the cork needed to be thick and the cork rolls are too thin and still not long enough. Overall, I'm happy with the end result. I hope this inspires you to create your own little cork board or message center. If you do create one, send me a message and attach photos of your creativity at work! :)
